Northern Flickers
These guys has never appeared at this blog before.
Northern Flicker is a large, brown and black woodpecker with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. When they fly you’ll see a a bright white patch on the rump.
Flickers have a black necklace above a a speckled breast and a distinct red spot on nape of neck. Male woodpeckers have black mustache.
Unlike the other woodpeckers, flickers are the only ones to regularly feed on the ground. In fact, I spotted a couple of flickers walking in the grass, searching for ants and beetles with their long slightly downcurved bills. After seeing me with the camera, the couple retreated to a tree.
