White-breasted Nuthatch
Nuthatches are other little fellas that I met in the Ipswich River area.
Needless to day that before I only saw them on the photos and the photos reflect only a small part of all charisma and friendliness of these guys. They may be a little less outgoing than chickadees but they did land on my hand to eat some birds’ snack.
White-breasted Nuthatches are bigger than chickadees (5-6″), they very active and agile. Most common view is the nuthatches creeping along trunks and large branches, probing into bark furrows with their straight, pointed bills. Nuthatches get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside.
Here goes a set of photos made during my visit to the Ipswich River.
Thank you, little fellas, for your friendliness and patience!
