It was the second appearance of the Soviet weightlifting team at the World Championships. Like their debut in 1946, the 1950 World Championships tournament was held in Paris. This time Team USSR took the 3rd place with USA and Egypt on the 1st and 2nd place respectively.
At the Worlds, the Soviet athletes won no gold medals, 4 silver medals (Chimishkyan, Lopatin, Vorobyev, Kutsenko) and 2 bronze medals (Svetilko and Pushkarev).
At the European Championships, Team USSR won all 6 gold medals (Chimishkyan, Lopatin, Svetilko, Pushkarev Vorobyev, Kutsenko).
