Nikolay Zakharov Sets a New World Record in Snatch

August 4, 1971, Lubeck, Germany – 23-year old Nikolay Zakharov, bantamweight of Kemerovo, Russia snatches 125.5kg and sets a new world record in the 56kg weightclass at the USSR Cup in Alma Ata.
Twin brothers Nikolay and Vladimir Zakharov were graduates of Kemerovo’s school of weightlifting in Siberia.
Both were on the top lists of Soviet bantamweights in the 1980s.
Nikolay Zakharov’s personal best were 275kg (125+150, Novosibirsk, 1981) in the 56kg and 297.5kg (132.5+165kg, Moscow, 1983) in the 60kg class. At the USSR Champoionships, Nikolay won 3 gold (1981, 1982, 1985), 3 silver (1980, 1983, 1986) and 2 bronze (1984, 1986) medals. In 1980, Nikolay Zakhaov won the USSR Cup (on the cover photo). In his career, he managed to set two world records.
In 1981, Nikolay Zakharov was select to compete for the national team at the World and European Championships and won bronze medals in both competitions in Lille, France.
Vladimir Zakharov’s personal best were 265kg (125+147.5), Donetsk, 1981) in the 56kg and 292.5kg (127.5+165kg, Moscow, 1982) in the 60kg class. He won a silver medals at the 1981 USSR Championships in Novosibirsk and 1981 USSR Cup in Donetsk.
