August 29, 1953, Stockholm, Sweden – Olympic Champion of Helsinki (1952), 23-year old Tommy Kono of the United States competes in the middleweight class (75kg) and sets a world record in clean-and-jerk (168.5kg) at the 1953 World Championships in Stockholm.
It was the first appearance of Kono at the World Championships and he won his first gold medal in the 75kg class. In the the previous year, Tommy Kono won the 1952 Summer Olympics in the 67.5kg weightclass.
