July 26, 1952, Helsinki, Finland – 22-year old lightweight Tamio “Tommy” Kono of Team USA competes at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.
The gold medal at the Summer Olympics in 1952 was the first Olympic gold that legendary Tommy Kono won is his outstanding career in this sport. He went on with a gold Olympic medal in 1956 and a silver medal in 1960.
Kono also won 6 world titles (1953-1955, 1957-1959) , 3 Pan American Games (1955, 1969, 1963) and set 21 world records in 4 weight classes!
