Leningrad, USSR, July 1979 – 30-year old Viktor Veretennikov wins the 1979 USSR Spartakiade in the 56kg weight class.
Viktor Veretennikov (b. 1949) was a world class bantamweight from Volgograd, USSR. He competed for the Trud club and was a vice champion of the world (1979), 2x USSR champion (1979, 1980), winner of the USSR Cup (1978).
He also won the USSR championship in clean-and-jerk in 1977 and 1978. He authored a world record in total in 1980.
At the 1979 USSR Spartakiade shown on the cover photo, Veretennikov became a champion with a total of 262.5кг (112.5+150).
