Arkady Vorobyev (USSR, silver medal), n/a, Bob Hoffman (USA, Head coach), Stan Stanczyk (USA, gold medal), Dietrich Wortmann, USA, Manager), Mukhtar Hussein (Egypt, coach), Araby Awad (Egypt, bronze medal), El Zayed Nosseir (Egypt, Manager), Kamal Mahgoub (Egypt, bantamweight).
It was the first weightlifting battle of the famous rivalry between Arkady Vorobyev of Sverdlovsk, USSR and Stan Stanczyk of Deroit, MI, USA. At the time, 25-year old Stanczyk was an Olympic champion and a 3x World champion. For a 26-year old Vorobyev, it was the first appearance at the Worlds championships. Both finished with a 420kg total and Stanczyk won by a lighter bodyweight.
The next encounter between two athletes took place at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and Stanczyk won again – this time by 7.5kg in total. Stanczyk won a silver Olympic medal and Vorobyev earned a bronze one.
In the third and the last meet, Vorobyev won a gold and Stanczyk a bronze at the 1953 World Championships in Stockholm. Arkady Vorobyev was ahead of his opponent by 15kg.
