Olympic Press Techniques: The Way They Did It Before 1972

On-line Demo by Lift Up

For those who were not following or competing in Olympic weightlifting before the mid 1970s, Olympic press lifts might seem exotic and odd compared to the snatch and clean and jerk of today.

Prior to that, Olympic weightlifting battles consisted of three lifts - press, snatch and clean and jerk.

The press required the lifter to bring the bar to his shoulders, wait two seconds for the judges' approval and then lift the bar overhead using only the strength of the athletes' arms. For a variety of reasons, the press was discontinued following the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany.

In this interactive demonstration of this oldtime lift, you can view how the legends of Olympic weightlifting performed the press lift in the 1950s and 1960s.

In order to view the clips, please select the athlete's name in the drop-down menu and then click the "View" button to proceed. You may consider using the control buttons below the clips to enhance the experience of watching these almost forgotten today lifts by the classics of Olympic weightlifting.
