Born: 6/13/1945 in Omsk, USSR

Yuri Shatalov was a steady Russian elite league blueliner of the 1970s. Style wise, he was rather a reliable solid player in his own zone than a spectacular offensive defenseman. He wasn't a slick skater or a speedy zone-to-zone runnner. Shatalov's specialty was mostly physical play and shot-blocking during the opponents' attacks. He was quiet often assigned to neutralize specific players of the opponents' team.

Shatalov grew up and learned hockey craft in Western Siberia. He was a graduate of the hockey school in Omsk, USSR and played for various local teams in Siberia. Like many promising players of his time, played for the Red Army club during his military service in the Soviet Army in 1967-1969. In 1969, Shatalov joined the Krylya Sovetov Moscow to become one of the leaders and key players of this team in the next 10 seasons.

The mid 1970s were probably the peak of Shatalov's career in hockey. He became the 1974 USSR Championship and Cup winner and played a solid defensive game for the Team USSR. Although he wasn't a key player for the national team in the international games, his reliability and solid "stay-home" play was a factor for the overall depth on the blue line. In 1974, Yury Shatalov won the world title in 1974 in Finland.

Shatalov was invited to the Team USSR training camp and played in two games in the historical 1972 Summit Series. His contribution to the Team USSR performance in the 1974 Summit Series was slightly more essential. He managed to score 1 goal in 3 games and was an overall solid contributor to the Team USSR success.

Yury Shatalov was inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame in 1974.
