Alexander Kulikov was a solid above-average Russian Elite League defenseman. Although his appearances with the national team were rather occasional, Kulikov's score of 66 goals in 348 games of the Elite USSR league makes him a sound offensive blueliner.

18-year old Kulikov began to play elite hockey with the legendary Red Army club in 1969. After finishing his military service with the mighty CSKA and its Lipetsk farm club, Kulikov ended up with the Torpedo Gorky where he played in 1971-1976. In 1976, he was invited to play for the Moscow Spartak. The last season of his hockey career in 1981-1982, he spent playing for the Khimik Voskresensk.

At the time of the 1974 Summit Series, Alexander Kulikov was a young prospective candidate to play for Team USSR. He didn't play in the Series. In the later years, Alexander Kulikov was selected by Victor Tikhonov to play 3 games for the experimental Team USSR at the Canada Cup 1976.
