Vladimir Polupanov was recognized as a solid goaltender of the Soviet elite league in the 1970s.
Vladimir comes from a famous hockey family. His older brother, Victor Polupanov played center on the legendary Red Army and Team USSR line with Anatoly Firsov, LW and Vladimir Vikulov, RW. At 11, Vladimir Polupanov began to play hockey with the Dynamo Moscow youth hockey program. In his first two seasons in the elite league, he played for the CSKA (1967) and Krylya Sovetov (1968). In 1969, he joined the Dynamo Moscow where he played the rest of his hockey career. Unlike his brother, Vladimir Polupanov played most of his career in the net with the Dynamo Moscow which was a top contender for the national titles. In 1972 and 1976, he won the USSR Cup for the Dynamo club.
Like many other Soviet puck-stoppers of that era, his performance was overshadowed by the undeniable talent and world class performance of Vladislav Tretiak. Although Polupanov played for the junior Team USSR and, later on, for Team USSR-B in various international tournaments, he
wasn't able to break into the national team.
During the 1974 Summit Series, Vladimir Polupanov was selected as Team USSR third goalie. With outstanding performance by Tretiak in the first seven games and by Sidelnikov in Game 8, Polupanov didn't get his chance to play for the national team. However, the fact that of his selection was an indicator of the "who is who" ranking among the top Soviet netminders of that era.
