Wayne Dillon was another brilliant junior player who began his professional career in the WHA. He joined the Toronto Toros in the summer of 1973 at age 18, and quickly proved to be one of the leagues finest young forwards. After a strong rookie season
he followed up with a 95- point performance and was being considered one of the best young players in the game.
In the summer of 1975 New York Ranger General Manager John Ferguson selected Wayne as the Rangers 1st round draft pick (NHL rules forbid the drafting of players under age 20.) He followed up the draft selection with a huge contract offer that
convinced Wayne to leave his home- town and move to the Big Apple. It was a move both would regret. Wayne never got untracked with the Rangers. His numbers were at best average, and Ferguson was bitterly disappointed with his play. Wayne returned to the WHA in 1977-78 but never again approached he form he had shown in his early days with the Toros. He was out of pro hockey at the end of the 1981-82 season.
Like Pat Price Wayne was named to Team Canada as a developmental opportunity. Billy Harris also coached the Toros and felt
the exposure to the stars on Team Canada would assist Dillon in improving his own game. Wayne saw some playing time in the
exhibition games against the juniors but never saw any action in the Summit.
