When Canadian discuss their greatest hockey heroes one name that is always mentioned is Paul Henderson. Paul was one of the finest players in Canadian junior hockey and broke into the NHL to stay in 1963-64 with the Detroit Red Wings. He quickly developed the reputation of being a superb skater, good goal scorer and fine defensive player.

Late in the 1967-68 season he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the Frank Mahovlich deal. His finest season came in 1971-72 when he scored 38 goals for the Leafs. He was named to Team Canada 1972, and it was in the summit of that year that Paul entered hockey lore. Playing on a line with Bobby Clarke and Ron Ellis, Paul scored 7 goals and added 3 assists. He had the game winning goals for Team Canada in games 6, 7, and 8. The final goal broke a 5-5 tie with 34 seconds to go in the series and gave Canada the victory in the series. Paul struggled after the series turning in two average seasons with the Leafs. In the summer of 1974 he accepted a huge offer from the rival Toronto Toros of the WHA.

When Team Canada 1974 was being selected Paul, due to his heroics of two years before, was a natural choice. In some ways the 1974 Summit was a disappointment for Paul. Unlike 1972 where he was a big goal scorer, in 1974 Paul scored only 2 goals and picked up one assist (all of them in game 3.) However he and Bruce Macgregor formed a truly outstanding penalty- killing tandem. Time after time the mighty Soviet power play machine would try and get rolling and Henderson and MacGregor more times than not would stop them cold. It was a different role for Paul, but one in which he performed very well. After 5 fine years in the WHA, Paul returned to the NHL in 1979-80 and retired after that season.
