Happy Birthday, Valery! I saw you in Montreal also. I had a great time seeing those Olympics. Mostly watched weightlifting, of course!

That photo of Valery in the bottom of a clean is from Montreal '76, where he beat both Blagoev and Stoichkov. He had to make the 202.5 to win and made short work of it. I shook his hand when I saw him a day or so later downtown. Quite a champion was Shary. Glad to hear he's still with us and still lifting.

At 60, Valery Shary won the 2007 World Masters Championship in the 105 kg class with 93+120=213 kg. Shary by all means was one of the strongest athletes of the 1970s in the lightheavy weight class packed with world class talent both in the USSR (G. Bessonov, D. Rigert, G. Ivanchenko, B. Pavlov and more) and in the world (P. Baczako, L. Jenssen, K. Kangasniemi, R. Milser, T. Stoichev...)
