Yurik Vardanyan: A Starry Night in Dnepropetrovsk (1982)
History in Color:
May 21, 1982, Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, USSR – Legendary Yurik Vardanyan of Leninakan (Gyumri), Armenia sets a world record in the snatch in the 90kg class at the 1982 USSR Championships in Dnepropetrovsk.
In the end of the night, Yurik Vardanyan won a gold medal with an outstanding 415kg (190+225) total. It was his 4th national title and he set 4 world records on his way to the top of the medal stand.:
- Snatch (188kg)
- Snatch (190kg)
- CJ (228kg) and
- Total (415kg)
Interestingly enough, Yurik Vardanyan scored several 3+ world records (WR) per night in his career including:
- 5 WRs at 1979 USSR Spartakiade in Leningrad
- 5 WRs at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow
- 4 WRs at the 1982 USSR Championships in Dnepropetrovsk
- 4 WRs at the 1984 Friendship Cups in Varna
