August 2, 1979, Leningrad, Russia – Candidate to the 1980 Olympic Team USSR, sub heavyweigh Vladimir Kononov of the Trud Club of Novokuybyshevsk, Russia competed in the snatch program in the 100kg class at the 1979 USSR Spartakiade and USSR Championships in Leningrad.
Vladimir Kononov (born in 1951) was one of the most talented and powerful Soviet athletes in the 100kg class of the 1970s. For various reasons, he was rather under exposed on the international arena.
He competed in the sub heavyweight class for the Trud Club of Novokuybyshevsk and was the vice champion of the USSR (1976). the winner of the USSR Cup in total (387.5kg, 1976) and in clean-and-jerk (227.5kg, 1976).
