Tufted Titmouse
This is another fella I met in the Ipswich River Audubon Sanctuary.
Very much like it is described in the textbooks, Tufted Titmice were flocking with chickadees, nuthatches, and woodpeckers. Unlike chickadees and nuthatches, titmice never built enough courage to land on my hand to get some bird seeds. They were close, but not quiet there.
Prefix “tit” comes from Scandinavian word meaning “little” and suffix “mouse” is derived from the Old English “mase” meaning “bird”. So, titmouse literally means “little bird”. Titmice are bigger than chickadees and nuthatches (6″). Tufted Titmice are acrobatic foragers, if a bit slower and more methodical than chickadees.
Enjoy the photos of the Tufted Titmice of Ipswich!
