Anatoly Zhgun

:: 2/20/2008: Geoff Fleming, Union N.J., U.S.A.
Anatoli Zhgun was a world class lifter who was rarely heard of, outside of the USSR. He was a many time world record holder in both the snatch and C&J lifts, but was overshadowed by men such as Serge Lopatin and Vladimir Kaplunov, who were slightly better due in part, to higher press poundages. He set a dramatic record jerk of 358lbs in the jerk, ( lightweight class), at the 1961 Prize of Moscow competition. Five lifters cleaned this poundage but only Zhgun succeeded. One wonders what he might have accomplished had he been allowed to compete on the international stage?
