Yury Vlasov

Yes, Zhabotinsky deliberately missed 217.5 on his second attempt, and Vlasov got complacent and missed the same weight, leaving the door open for Zhabotinsky to win the gold with his third attempt. BUT--Vlasov's 210 clean and jerk forced Zhabotinsky to take 217.5. If Vlasov had taken 212.5, Zhabotinsky would have needed 220; if Vlasov had made 215, Zhabotinsky would have needed 222.5. Vlasov went after the record rather than a sure victory. He may also have wasted some energy by taking a fourth attempt on the snatch.

Dont think that Vlasov ever broke Paul Anderson's press world record. His 185.5 with the tecnique of 1964 would have been about 200-205kg.... Nothing special to equal a record a dozen years after. - Anderson advantage on the 2nd best athlete(Hepburn) was 13kg, and about 25 on the 3rd. - Alekseev had 6kg on Mang and 8.5 on Reding.....and was the greatest difference of post Anderson era. Normally a difference of 2% bettween 1st and 2nd is already exceptional, - It is about what achieved Sergej Bubka, - Bolton in 2009 had just the 1.3% over Gay

The great Yuri Vlasov has being my hero and inspiration for my weightlifting since I was about 13 reading about his achievements in weightlifting and looking at his inspiring photos in the sports magazines lifting those big weights. In one article I had read that Yuri had witnessed the mighty Paul Anderson lifting at an exhibition in Moscow some phenomenal weights and Yuri Vlasov promised to beat Paul If they met at the next World Championships etc. But of course this never eventuated because Paul unfairly was disqualified from amateur weightlifting because he accepted some sort of financial reward and that caused his disqualification. Yuri Vlasov was tuned, fast precise and unbeatable in the 1960 Olympics with the ever present , tremeneous weightlifter Norbert Schemansky taking top three place. Yuri was really unfortunate to be tricked in 1964, but Mr Yuri Vlasov has being and will always be the most significant name in the modern and seriously clean weightlifting. My wish is to one day meet the still strong and great Yuri Vlasov. GOOD HEALTH TO YOU Mr YURI VLASOV.

I love the image this man exhibits of the atypical weight-lifter: bear-like strength of coupled with great intelligence. I also admire the moral qualities of the man and his reputation for honesty during the years of the communist regime. I hope he was able to put the incident behind him that happened at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics involving him a Leonid Zhabotinsky. Yury had nothing to be ashamed of. His place in history is assured. He is someone I would like to meet and be mentored by...

Yuri Vlasov, who broke Paul Anderson's [American] world records, which were thought to last for a very long time, if not for ever, is not only one of the greatest lifters ever, he is a very honest and intellectual person and is always true to his conscience. By education he has a degee in Aeronautical Engineering. He is a very good poet, story writer and novelist. Many of his books have been published in all these categories, in Russian. During competitions he always used to recite his poems. His wife's name is Natalya. During one World Championships, his record snatch lift was passed by the judges, but after putting the weight down Yuri asked the judges to fail the lift because his knee has [barely] touched the platform. After retiring from weightlifting and writing books , he got into politics and became a member of the Soviet Duma [parliament] from a district of Moscow, during President Gorbachov and became an outspoken member of a Duma Committee during Yeltsin's time. As a result of injuries from lifting, he was disabled for some time, and was forced to use a wheel chair. After recovering from back injuries, Yuri Vlasov started lifting again and competing too. Reportedly. he has lifted 150 kgs in a competition. His political views are similar to those of the very famous dissident Andrey Sakharov. Iwould love to see him. WHAT A MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
